Do you enjoy using the Trans Pennine Trail and your local National Cycle Routes? We’re looking for volunteers to help maintain the Network and keep the route in top condition.
The Pennine volunteer group help to look after a number of routes, including National Route 62, which is part of the popular Trans Pennine Trail coast-to-coast route.
Our friendly team of volunteers could do with an extra pair of hands helping to carry out maintenance, signing and general tidying on the Network.

Why become a Sustrans volunteer?
Our volunteers are fundamental in looking after the National Cycle Network and supporting others to be more active.
By helping maintain the routes and running promotional stalls at local events, Sustrans volunteers are making a real difference in their communities.
What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?
As a volunteer ranger, you'll be expected to carry out agreed tasks from your volunteer group plan. This will be in coordination with your group and Sustrans.
Some tasks may be organised by the whole group and others are self-led.
Your role as a ranger may involve:
- checking for missing or broken signs
- following the signing guidance set out by Sustrans, TPT and local landowners
- carrying out general tidy-ups and clearing back encroaching vegetation
- reporting any issues to your volunteer co-ordinator and the Trans Pennine Trail office
- attending group workdays and signing rides
- looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route.
- habitat management to improve the routes for wildlife.
What we're looking for
We’re looking for people who:
- are self-motivated and can carry out tasks independently once directed
- work well within a team
- live close to, or travel regularly along, the allocated section of route using sustainable transport
- have good communication skills
- are able to work with a diverse range of people and are committed to Sustrans' mission.
We welcome applicants with a wide range of skills, but above all, we're looking for enthusiasm and commitment.
Time commitment
Ideally, your section of the route needs to be checked once a month and any issues reported to your group co-ordinator.
You'll need to attend other organised activities as they arise.
Communication is essential to your role, so you'll also need to attend group meetings and activities to keep up to date with local developments and your group's plan.
Training and support offered
You will receive training, support and direction from your Sustrans volunteer co-ordinator, land manager and Network development manager.
Your training and support will include the following:
- An initial training and induction session will be provided regionally.
- Sustrans offers a number of different training courses that will support you in your role, eg signing the network, organising and leading a workday, ride manager and walk leader training.
- Other training will provide valuable updates and networking opportunities with other volunteers.
- You will receive central communications to support you in your role and can join the online community to find support from other volunteers.
- Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
