If you enjoy cycling or walking, join our volunteer rangers throughout the country who do practical tasks to keep the National Cycle Network in the best possible condition.

This is a great role for anyone who lives in or around Windsor and Maidenhead and wants to help get more people walking and cycling.

What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?

Our wonderful volunteer rangers:

  • ride or walk their section of route regularly
  • check signage – lookout for missing or broken signs; report permanent sign problems the appropriate Council; fix temporary signs according to our Signing Guidelines
  • keep signs visible - cleaning them and cutting back vegetation
  • check the route and do light vegetation clearance to keep it clear
  • litter pick spot areas, report fly-tipping to the local Council
  • report major issues to your Volunteer Group Co-ordinator
  • attend group task days, signing rides and relevant training courses
  • look after artwork or Millennium Mileposts on your route.

What we're looking for

We're looking for people who:

  • have a wide range of skills but above all enthusiasm and commitment
  • live close to or travel regularly along your allocated section of the route by sustainable transport
  • are active to check the route and do light maintenance to keep it in good order
  • are practical to do light maintenance such as cutting back vegetation and replacing signs
  • are self-motivated and persistent
  • are online to report problems and complete our volunteer activity report
  • are a good communicators
  • enjoy being part of a team.

Time commitment

You need to check your section of the route at least once a month.

Training and support offered

  • You’ll receive our volunteer handbook and have access to our online Sustrans volunteer learning platform.
  • We’ll arrange for an experienced ranger to show you the ropes.
  • You'll receive advice from a local Group Coordinator.
  • Access to an online community to find support from other Rangers throughout the UK.
  • Sustrans volunteer meet-ups to network, get updates and training.
