Volunteer ranger, Rotherham (TPT)

We're looking for volunteers to help maintain the National Cycle Network and keep the route in top condition. Our Rotherham volunteer group helps to look after National route 62 which is part of the popular Trans Pennine Trail coast to coast route.

Our friendly team of volunteers could do with an extra pair of hands helping to carry out maintenance, signing and general tidying on the Network.
  

Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

Our volunteers are fundamental in looking after the National Cycle Network and supporting others to be more active.

They help people discover the joys of cycling through the delivery of led rides.

They teach children to ride a bike safely. And they run promotional stalls at local events.

What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?

You'll be expected to carry out agreed tasks from your volunteer group plan. This will be in coordination with your group and Sustrans.

Some tasks may be organised by the whole group and others are self-led.

Your tasks may include:

  • checking for missing or broken signs
  • following the signing guidance set out by Sustrans, TPT and local landowners
  • carrying out general tidy ups and clearing back encroaching vegetation
  • attending group workdays and signing rides
  • looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route.
  • habitat management to improve the routes for wildlife
  • inspecting an allocated section of the route
  • temporary signs as per the signing guidance and training
  • looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route
  • taking part in other group activities such as organised rides, bike maintenance, and learn to ride sessions
  • going to events to promote the work of Sustrans and encourage more people to walk and cycle
  • reporting any major issues to the relevant person (we'll advise on this)
  • liaising with our Network Development Manager regarding any new route developments in your area
  • recording your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers.
      

What we're looking for

We're looking for people who:

  • are self-motivated to carry out tasks independently once directed
  • work well within a team
  • lives close to or travels regularly along your allocated section of the route by sustainable transport
  • have good communication skills
  • are able to work with a diverse range of people and committed to Sustrans' mission.
      

Time commitment

Ideally, your section of the route needs to be checked once a month and any issues reported to your group coordinator.

Attendance at other organised activities as they arise.
  

Training and support offered

  • An initial induction session.
  • Support and direction from the Sustrans volunteer coordinator, Network development manager along with the Trans Pennine Trail office.
  • Training courses.
  • Networking opportunities.
  • You will receive central communications to support you in your role.
  • Access to the online community of volunteers.
  • Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
