Volunteer ranger, Havant

We're looking for active, local volunteer rangers to help maintain and monitor National Cycle Network routes 22 and 2, covering Havant, Hayling Island’s famous Billy Trail and the surrounding areas. You’ll be helping to improve your local environment and make it easier for people to walk and cycle.

Becoming a volunteer is a practical, straightforward way to improve cycle routes,  a chance for you to improve your local environment and provide good places for people to enjoy walking and cycling.
 

What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?

As a volunteer, you'll be expected to carry out agreed tasks from your volunteer group plan.

This will be in coordination with your group and Sustrans.

Your role as a ranger may involve:

  • inspecting an allocated section of route
  • carrying out general tidy ups and clearing back overgrown vegetation as per the health and safety guidance
  • checking for missing or broken signs and fitting temporary signs as per the signing guidance and following training
  • attending group workdays, training and signing rides
  • looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route
  • taking part in other group activities such as organised rides, bike maintenance, learn to ride sessions and events to promote the work of Sustrans and encourage more people to walk and cycle
  • reporting any major issues to the relevant person (we'll advise you on this)
  • liaising with our Network development manager regarding any new route developments in your area
  • recording your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers
  • following Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • being able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures.
       

What we're looking for

We're looking for people who:

  • are self-motivated to carry out tasks independently once directed
  • work well within a team
  • live close to or travels regularly along your allocated section of route by sustainable transport
  • have good communication skills
  • are able to work with a diverse range of people and committed to Sustrans' mission.

We welcome applicants with a wide range of skills, but above all we're looking for enthusiasm and commitment.

Time commitment

Ideally, your section of the route needs to be checked once a month and any issues reported to your group coordinator. 

Joining task days and buddying with other volunteers is fun but optional.
  

Training and support offered

Sustrans will provide you with the training and tools you need to carry out this role including a half-day training session on your allocated section of route. 

You’ll have access to Sustrans guides and online support.

You'll also have the chance to meet other volunteers at training and networking events, and to get involved with other Sustrans activity in the area.
