Volunteer ranger, Barnsley (TPT)

Are you passionate about the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) National Cycle Network in Barnsley? We’re looking for volunteers to help maintain the network and keep the route in top condition.

Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

Our volunteers are fundamental in looking after the National Cycle Network and supporting others to be more active.

From helping people discover the joys of cycling through the delivery of led rides, teaching children to ride a bike safely and running promotional stalls at local events.

Sustrans volunteers are making a real difference in their communities.

What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?

As a volunteer you'll be expected to carry out agreed tasks from your volunteer group plan. This will be in coordination with your group and Sustrans.

Your role as a ranger may involve:

  • inspecting an allocated section of the route
  • carrying out general tidy ups and clearing back overgrown vegetation
  • checking for missing or broken signs and fitting temporary signs
  • attend group meetings, training and activities
  • looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route
  • taking part in other group activities such as organised rides, bike maintenance, learn to ride sessions and events to promote the work of Sustrans and encourage more people to walk and cycle
  • reporting any major issues to the relevant person (we'll advise you on this)
  • liaising with our Network development manager regarding any new route developments in your area
  • recording your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers
  • following Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • being able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures.

What we're looking for

We're looking for people who are:

  • self-motivated to carry out tasks independently once directed
  • able to work well within a team
  • lives close to or travels regularly along your allocated section of the route by sustainable transport
  • good communicators 
  • able to work with a diverse range of people and commit to Sustrans' mission.

We welcome applicants with a wide range of skills but above all enthusiasm and commitment.

If you are interested in helping to improve your local routes for all users to enjoy, we’d like to hear from you.

Time commitment

  • Ideally, your section of the route needs to be checked once a month. 

Training and support offered

  • Training, support and direction from the Sustrans volunteer coordinator, land manager and Network development manager.
  • Induction sessions will be provided regionally.
  • Sustrans offers a number of different training courses that will support you in your role.
  • Networking opportunities with other volunteers.
  • You will receive central communications to support you in your role.
  • An online community to find support from other volunteers.
  • Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
