Why become a Sustrans volunteer?
Our volunteers support others to be more active. From leading rides along the National Cycle Network to help people discover the joys of cycling, running walks to get others out and about, teaching children to ride a bike safely, to running promotional stalls at local events – Sustrans volunteers are making a real difference in their communities.
What does a Sustrans volunteer group coordinator do?
Your role as a group coordinator will involve:
- leading a group of individuals who are passionate about supporting others to be more active and maintaining the National Cycle Network
- keeping the group informed of local activities they can join in, including organising regular meetings, communications and socials
- keeping a simple record of activities to report back as often as required
- following a group plan with your volunteer group, focusing on activities the volunteers want to concentrate on such as signing, basic maintenance of local Network routes, public rides, walks and events to promote active travel
- revisiting the group plan with your volunteer coordinator.
What we're looking for
To apply for this role you should be:
- an excellent communicator
- a good motivator, acting as support and encouragement for others
- someone able to identify skills and interests in the group, and co-ordinate activities and responsibilities
- someone able to work with a diverse range of people and committed to the Sustrans ethos.
Time commitment
- 5–10 hours a month, for workdays, events, meetings and communication with the group.
Training and support offered
- An initial training and induction session will be provided regionally.
- Sustrans organises a number of days throughout the year which will offer valuable updates, training in relevant skills and networking opportunities with other volunteers and group coordinators
- You will receive central communications to support you in your role and you can join our online community to find support from other group coordinators.
- Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
- Support and direction from the volunteer coordinator, land manager and network development manager.
