Volunteer group coordinator, Milton Keynes

Do you enjoy inspiring and motivating people to carry out a range of tasks? We're currently seeking a motivated, organised and positive person for the role of volunteer group coordinator to coordinate the work of our fantastic volunteers in Milton Keynes.

As a group coordinator, you would be responsible for coordinating local volunteer activities.

This involves motivating a volunteer group to carry out a range of tasks aimed at maintaining and enhancing the National Cycle Network, supporting Sustrans’ projects in the area and promoting walking and cycling. 

Group coordinators often carry out another volunteer role usually that of route maintenance volunteer ranger.

Summary of tasks

As a volunteer group coordinator you will:

  • create and review a volunteer group plan of tasks and activities, in coordination with the local volunteer group and Sustrans area staff
  • coordinate regular meetings and social gatherings with the group
  • manage the allocation of tasks within the group
  • understand the different maintenance responsibilities for the National Cycle Network in your area 
  • identify gaps and opportunities for volunteers, and support recruitment as needed in coordination with local staff
  • welcome and orientate new volunteers to the group and the specifics of their role locally 
  • provide a communication link to the Sustrans volunteer coordinator and relevant local staff 
  • follow Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures, and demonstrate these to the volunteer group
  • attend group/project meetings, relevant training and activities 
  • be able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures
  • record your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers, and encourage the volunteer group to do the same.
      

Skills required

We're looking for someone who is:

  • an excellent communicator 
  • a good motivator, acting as a source of support and
  • encouragement for others 
  • works well within a team 
  • well organised 
  • able to facilitate and chair meetings 
  • able to communicate via email.
      

Time commitment

  • One half-day to attend induction and activity-specific training.
  • One half-day per month (six days a year) to organise meetings or activities to bring the group together and discuss activities and plans.
  • Three to six days a year supporting group activities such as workdays, rides and walks.
  • Up to 12 evening meetings per year (it may be less).
  • One day to meet with your Sustrans volunteer coordinator and area staff to discuss and review the volunteer group plan.
