Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

Sustrans volunteers are making a real difference in their communities. Our volunteers support others to be more active.

They help people discover the joys of cycling and walking through task days, rides and walks.

You’ll learn new skills and build on existing ones with the support of Sustrans staff.

What does a Sustrans volunteer group coordinator do?

As the volunteer group coordinator you will be asked to:

• coordinate and motivate local volunteers, including welcoming new volunteers
• support your group in carrying out the group plan
• communicate with all Sustrans volunteers in your area, and hold regular indoor meetings or outdoor activities to allow updates to the whole group and to share information
• stay in touch with the Sustrans volunteer team, relevant local staff and the TPT Office
• run public bike rides and/or walks
• promote walking and cycling in local communities
• promote and participating in litter picks and task days on the National Cycle Network
• help to ensure local National Cycle Network routes are well signed
• following Sustrans’ and TPT health and safety and safeguarding policies and procedures, and demonstrate these to the volunteer group.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is:

• an excellent communicator 
• a good motivator
• works well within a team 
• well organised 
• able to facilitate and chair meetings 
• able to communicate via email
• able to work with a diverse range of people and committed to the Sustrans and TPT ethos.

Time commitment

One day per month, which may include workdays, events, meetings and communication with the group.

Training and support offered

• Initial training and induction session.
• Training courses that will support you in your role.
• Networking opportunities with other volunteers.
• Central communications.
• Online communities to find support from other volunteers.
• Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
• Support from Sustrans and the Trans Pennine Trail Office.
