What does a Sustrans volunteer group coordinator do?

Your role as a group coordinator will involve:

  • establishing a group of individuals who are passionate about supporting others to be more active and maintaining the Network
  • welcoming new volunteers to the group and the specifics of their role locally 
  • establishing a programme of local activities volunteers can join in with e.g. meetings, workdays, signing rides, walks, promotional stalls and socials
  • understanding the different maintenance responsibilities for the National Cycle Network in your area 
  • identifying gaps and opportunities for volunteers, and supporting recruitment as needed in coordination with local staff
  • recording your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers, and encouraging your volunteer group to do the same
  • creating and reviewing a volunteer group plan of tasks and activities, in coordination with your group and Sustrans.
  • following Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures, and demonstrate these to the volunteer group
  • providing a communication link to the Sustrans volunteer coordinator and relevant local staff
  • being able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures.
      

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is:

  • an excellent communicator 
  • a good motivator, acting as a source of support and
  • encouragement for others 
  • works well within a team 
  • well organised 
  • able to facilitate and chair meetings 
  • able to communicate via email.

We welcome applicants with a wide range of skills but above all enthusiasm and commitment.

Time commitment

  • One half-day to attend induction and activity-specific training.
  • One half-day per month (six days a year) to organise meetings or activities to bring the group together and discuss activities and plans.
  • Three to six days a year supporting group activities such as workdays, rides and walks.
  • One day to meet with your Sustrans volunteer coordinator and area staff to discuss and review the volunteer group plan.
      

Training and support offered

  • An initial training and induction session will be provided regionally.
  • Sustrans offers a number of different training courses which will support you in your role e.g. group coordinator training, signing the network, organising and leading a workday, ride manager and walk leader training.
  • Networking opportunities with other volunteers.
  • You will receive central communications to support you in your role
  • An online community to find support from other volunteers.
  • Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
  • You will receive training, support and direction from the Sustrans volunteer coordinator, land manager and network development manager.
  • Other training can be requested.
