Volunteer group coordinator, East Antrim

Do you enjoy motivating and inspiring others and would like to support Sustrans in making it easier for people to walk and cycle? We're currently seeking a volunteer to encourage and coordinate the activities of our enthusiastic volunteer group covering East Antrim from Newtownabbey into North Belfast.

You will bring the local volunteers together, motivating and coordinating activities, to encourage walking and cycling and activities to enjoy the local paths and routes.

What does a Sustrans volunteer group coordinator do?

As the volunteer group coordinator you will be asked to:

  • coordinate and motivate local volunteers, including welcoming new volunteers
  • communicate with all Sustrans volunteers in your area, and hold regular indoor meetings or outdoor activities to allow updates to the whole group and to share information
  • put together and review an annual Group Plan with your group and our support, which outlines activities for the year – events, rides, walks, task days
  • support your group in carrying out the Group Plan
  • stay in touch with the Sustrans volunteer team
  • run public bike rides and/or walks
  • promote walking and cycling in local communities
  • promote and participating in litter picks and task days on the National Cycle Network
  • help to ensure local National Cycle Network routes are well signed.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is:

  • excellent communicator
  • good motivator, acting as a source of support and encouragement for others
  • works well within a team
  • well organised
  • ability to facilitate/chair meetings
  • able to communicate via e-mail

Time commitment

A few hours a month (this will include volunteer task days, events, meetings, email contact).

Training and support offered

  • Initial training and induction sessions.
  • Networking opportunities with other volunteers, and training in relevant skills.
  • Regular communications to support you in your role.
  • Direct contact with the volunteer coordinator in Sustrans’ Belfast office.
  • An online community to find support from other volunteers.
  • Your expenses will be reimbursed when agreed in advance.
  • Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments.
