Volunteer community route champions, Canterbury and Whitstable

Our community route champions monitor and look after the everyday off-road cycling routes that are important for essential journeys like going to work and school. Clearing overgrown vegetation to cleaning signs and reporting potholes you’ll be doing practical activities to keep these routes in the best possible condition.

What does a Sustrans community route champion volunteer do?

  • Gets to know their local off-road cycle routes.
  • Walks or cycles along the cycle route regularly to check the condition. Looking at the surface, signage, boundaries and obstacles.
  • Fixes small problems such as snipping back. undergrowth, cleaning signs, removing graffiti
  • Picks up litter.
  • Reports larger problems such as potholes and damaged signs to Kent County Council Highways.

 

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is:

  • enthusiastic and committed
  • active and practical
  • living or working close to the Network.

 

Time commitment 

A couple of hours every week.

 

Training and support offered

Sustrans will provide you with the training, skills and tools you need to carry out this role, including:

  • Sustrans half-day training session 
  • access to Sustrans guidance 
  • central communications 
  • networking opportunities to meet other volunteers 
  • first aid training.
