The National Cycle Network in Scotland

There are approximately 1,643 miles (2,644 km) of National Cycle Network routes in Scotland, including 702 miles of traffic-free routes which use a mix of railway path, canal towpath, forest road, shared-use path, segregated cycle lanes and redetermined rural footways.

National Cycle Network routes in Scotland run through many areas of outstanding natural beauty, taking in vast forests, iconic castles, shimmering lochs, tranquil glens and spectacular coastlines. The routes provide a unique snapshot of the country’s rich history whilst also connecting all of Scotland's major cities.

Network development

In Scotland, the network is promoted and developed by Sustrans in partnership with local and national roads and planning authorities, Transport Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Canals, NatureScot, National Park Authorities, landowners and other bodies. Artworks 

Sustrans commissions various artworks and interpretation projects along the National Cycle Network.

Millennium Mileposts

In 2000 Sustrans commissioned artists to create cast-iron 'Millennium Mileposts', 175 of which are located on the National Cycle Network in Scotland.

Community Groups

Funded by Transport Scotland and delivered by Sustrans Scotland, the Love Your Network Grant empower communities to implement improvements which make journeys on the National Cycle Network more attractive and enjoyable.

Volunteers
