National Route 81 runs in sections between Aberystwyth and Wolverhampton.

Route 81 runs from Aberystwyth to Wolverhampton, with the section running through Wales called Lôn Cambria.

Lôn Cambria travels 113 miles from the coast at Aberystwyth to the historic border town of Shrewsbury, crossing the heart of beautiful Mid Wales through the Cambrian mountains and alongside the beautiful Elan Valley reservoirs to Rhayader.

With red kites soaring above, the route follows quiet lanes linking the picturesque market towns of Llanidloes and Newtown.

A final climb on the Roman Road over Long Mountain offers panoramic views before descending into Shrewsbury.

Please note there are some sections of Lôn Cambria between Welshpool and Shrewsbury that are not part of the National Cycle Network.

The route resumes between Shrewsbury and Telford, and is then open in sections between Telford and Wolverhampton.

Route closures (Elan Valley & Telford)

The section of Route 81 passing through Devil's Gulch in the Elan Valley is temporarily closed due to a landslide. Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is assessing the possibility of a diversion.

In Telford, the route is closed on Woodhouse Lane from Monday 26 July 2021 to Tuesday 26 July 2022 (current target date).

A diversion is in place. When travelling north and westbound out of Haughton Village, leave Route 81 and continue straight on towards Priorslee Road A464.

This will take you to the Castle Farm Interchange. From here, take the exit to Castle Farm Way A460.

Follow Castle Farm Way until you pass Lakeside Garden Centre.

Ahead of you will be a pedestrian and cyclist crossing, where you can leave the road to the left and continue on a traffic-free section of Route 81.

These directions can be followed in reverse when travelling southwards.
