Route 648 is open between Shirebrook Rail Station and Sherwood Forest via Market Warsop. When complete it will connect near Bakewell with Route 680 to Sherwood Forest via Baslow, Chesterfield, Bolsover, Shirebrook and Warsop.

From Shirebrook Station the route starts out traffic-free, then traffic-free alongside the B6031, then traffic-free before travelling along Burns Lane and Broomhill Lane. It then heads traffic-free into Sherwood Forest.

The section into Sherwood Forest does not involve a section alongside the road, so it is likely to be more attractive for leisure cycling. It also meets with a very long stretch of Route 6 which is traffic-free.
